ALBAWABA - In an official statement, NATO announced appointing Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte as its latest Secretary-General.

Rutte will be taking over office on October 1st, during a time considered vital for the alliance as Russia continues to wage its war against Ukraine.

"The North Atlantic Council decided to appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg," the alliance said in a statement.

Current NATO head, Jens Stoltenberg, took to X to welcome his successor Rutte, wishing him a successful journey.

"I warmly welcome #NATO Allies' choice of @MinPres Mark Rutte as my successor. Mark is a true transatlanticist, a strong leader, and a consensus-builder. I wish him every success as we continue to strengthen NATO".
