Iraq has informed Arab League chief Amr Mussa it is ready to return national archives and official documents seized during its 1990-1991 occupation of Kuwait, the official news agency KUNA reported.
Mussa, quoted by KUNA, said Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri had informed him that ministries in Baghdad were gathering all Kuwaiti documents and archives in a coordinated effort.
"The government will continue compiling all concerned documents so that they can be returned to Kuwait," Mussa was reportedly told, adding that he was tasked with organizing the return of the papers to Kuwait.
KUNA said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan had welcomed Iraq's decision as a "positive development".
Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait in August 1990 and were expelled from the emirate by a US-led multinational coalition seven months later in the 1991 Gulf War. On April 24, Kuwait's minister of state for foreign affairs, Mohammed al-Sabah, said his country was awaiting "a positive initiative" from Iraq to advance the reconciliation process. (Albawaba.com)
