Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak met Saturday morning with George Tenet, chief of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), to review ideas for a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians and the issue of Iraq.

Neither side has issued any statements after the meeting, which was also attended by the US ambassador to Cairo, David Welch.

Egypt's state-run MENA news agency reported that the visit was part of Tenet’s regional tour of the Middle East.

Tenet last visited Egypt in June 2001, when he became a key player in the Mideast conflict after he drafted an accord between the Palestinians and Israel to reach a ceasefire.

Mubarak is scheduled to visit the United States March 2-6 for talks on the Middle East crisis with senior US officials, Egypt's embassy in Washington has said.
