Gamal Mubarak, the son of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak, has welcomed the new climate in Egypt and the reform moves. Speaking to a group of British reporters visiting Egypt, he said, "We have presidential elections in September and parliamentary elections in November... We want the elections to send a message to our people (that) there is serious change," The Daily Telegraph newspaper, which published the remarks, said Tuesday.
In addition, Mubarak said, "This is a period of vibrancy, change and reflection." Referring to rumors that he would succeed his father as president, he noted, "I am absolutely clear in my mind and the President's mind, that this story of president and son has nothing to do with reality ... There are much more important things that we are discussing." Mubarak added the question of dynastic succession should finally be "put to bed" by his father's decision to open up this year's presidential elections to opposition candidates.
