The President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano visited on Sunday the Saharan refugee camps of Tindouf, in the extreme south west of Algeria as part of a three day official trip to Algeria, according to the Algerian press agency.
Chissano accepted the invitation of the head of the separatist movement of the Polisario Front and President of the Arab Republic of Sahara, RASD, proclaimed in 1976 by Mohamed Abdelaziz, but not accepted by many countries. The Mozambican President expressed his hope that his visit to the area would allow him to learn more about the Western Sahara conflict, which has been raging for 30 years and has soured Moroccan Algerian relations.
The leaders of Mozambique and Algeria have expressed their desire to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and have already formed investment associations to build firm partnerships.
