Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Co. (MTC) has awarded Motorola a contract worth almost Dh83 million ($270 million) to expand the country's network, reported the Gulf News.

Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) signed the contract with Kuwait's MTC to expand its nationwide global system for mobile communications (GSM) network and to conduct the country's first General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) trial.

The network expansion will allow MTC to add 150,000 new subscribers to its existing network, said the paper.

The expansion project and the GPRS trial are scheduled should be finished by early next year. Commercial deployment of GPRS data solutions will begin following the trial period.

Motorola's GTSS will integrate its market leading Horizon Systems GSM infrastructure solution in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrums. MTC's dual band network has been running since September 1999 – Albawaba.com
