ALBAWABA - The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry released a statement saying that most of those who lost their lives in the massive fire that engulfed an apartment building in the Mangaf area were Indians.
The ministry stated that the death toll has soared to 50 people. Dozens more were injured in the fire in Mangaf, south of Kuwait City, which broke out around dawn on Wednesday at the ground level of the block housing nearly 200 workers.
Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya told reporters that one of the injured was pronounced dead overnight. "The majority of the dead are Indians. There are other nationalities but I don't remember exactly" Al-Yahya added.
Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, released a statement commenting on the incident and sending his condolences to the families of those affected. Modi instructed the government to offer "all possible assistance" and for "MoS External Affairs to travel to Kuwait to oversee the relief measures and facilitate expeditious repatriation of the mortal remains".
"Upon reaching back to Delhi after today’s two oath-taking ceremonies, chaired a meeting to review the situation in the wake of the fire mishap in Kuwait, where people of Indian origin have been affected," Modi said in a post on X.
