Following the launch of the national plan to fight the plague of car accidents in Morocco, which was initiated in April 2004 by the Moroccan Minister of Means of Transportation, Karim Ghellab, and the permanent secretary of the National Committee for the Prevention Car Accidents CNPAC (Comite national de prevention des accidents de la circulation), Azzedine Chraibi, the Moroccan authorities report palpable results though insufficient.
Bladi.Net reports that between April 2004 and April 2005, the number of road accidents recorded a 5.9% decrease, which resulted in a 7.5% decline in the number of dead and a 3.5% drop in the number of severely wounded persons.
The main basis of this decrease is the new safety regulations and the strict enforcement by the police, as well as the increased efforts being exerted in prevention (mainly through the national campaign against car accidents).
