A transcript of the phone conversation Saturday night between King Mohammad VI and Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the UN, indicates that the King reaffirmed his desire to resolve the Sahara crisis and to work closely with the UN. The details of the conversation were only released by the official Moroccan press on Monday.
Annan indicated that the only way is to end the conflict through a negotiated and durable peace. The Moroccan King responded that Morocco's policy as to the area has not changed. However, he sounded a conciliatory tone claiming that Morocco has worked successfully with the UN in the past, such as the Nairobi summit of 1982 and will make every effort to find a solution.
