Emirates airlines is considering to increase its flights to the Kuala Lumpur (KL) International Airport, and on a longer term, the airlines is also studying introducing a direct flight to Malaysia.

Emirates group managing director – Sales and marketing department - Maurice Flanagan was quoted by the News Straits Times as saying that Kuala Lumpur had not been a "problem route" for Emirates.

"We have enjoyed good traffic rights from Kuala Lumpur and I don't see the reason why we cannot increase the number of flights to this destination," he said.

Emirates currently flies from Dubai to Kuala Lumpur via Dhaka four times a week, every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Flanagan told the Malaysian paper that there was also a possibility of a direct flight once Emirates has taken delivery of the 58 new widebody aircraft from the year 2006 to 2010.

He pointed out that Emirates did not have traffic right problems with Malaysia unlike in some other Asean countries like Indonesia.

He said the seat occupancy to KL dropped since the Sept 11 attack in New York. “But the drop is not only to KL but to all destinations. I am glad to say that seat occupancy to all destinations is returning to normal.”

Emirates recently announced the purchase of 58 widebody aircraft at a tune of US$15 billion (about RM57 billion) to be taken delivery between 2006 and 2010.

The purchase include 22 Airbus A380s with an option for another 10, eight Airbus A340-600s and three A330s, and 25 Boeing 777s – Albawaba.com
