More than half a ton of what is commonly known in Algeria as 'Kif' or cannabis was seized in the Sahara region in the week of October 11. Customs inspectors spotted tracks in the sand in the region of Hassi Mestour, popular with smugglers of all types, particularly of cigarettes.

The customs officials tracked down the 4 x 4 vehicles and found the horde of cannabis inside. Three people aged 27-39 have been arrested. Three mobile phones were also taken from the vehicle.

It is believed that the drugs came from Morocco. It is believed that there are many other drug traffickers operating through this region.
