The translation of Michele Amari's book, "The history of the Muslims in Sicily" was the focus of a conference, held recently in the Algerian national library. The conference was organized by the director of the translation project and a number of Italian universities.
According to <i>Liberate Algeria</i>, Michele Amari, was a Middle East scholar, who lived in the 19th century. He was given the task of collecting all the manuscripts describing the history of Arabs living in Sicily but decided to continue his project and create a synthesis of all the material he had collected.
It took him three years to complete his project but the outcome is considered by many as a unique masterpiece. The book, which was originally published in 1854, is an historical patch-work of philosophical, historical, theological and literary materials. Amine Zaoui, the director of the Algerian national library, expressed his hope that one day this book will be accessible to all Algerian readers.
