Mehlis sure Syria behind Hariri killing

The outgoing chief of the UN investigation into the killing of ex-Lebanon's premier, Rafiq al-Hariri was quoted as saying he is certain that Syria was behind the murder.

Speaking to Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper Detlev Mehlis responded "yes" to a question if he was "perfectly convinced of Syria's responsibility in the murder of al-Hariri." "The Syrian authorities are responsible," said Mehlis in comments published on Saturday.

The UN investigator, whose mandate for al-Hariri's inquiry ended on Thursday, will stay on until a replacement is found. The Security Council, expressing "extreme concern" that Syria had not yet cooperated fully with investigators, voted unanimously earlier this week to extend the inquiry into the assassination of Hariri another by six months.
