Mauritanians have voted massively in favor of limiting presidents to a maximum of 10 years in power in a referendum aimed at ending decades of coup attempts and one-party system.
Interior Minister Mohamed Ahmed Ould Mohamed Lemine on Monday announced 97 percent of voters in Sunday's constitutional referendum had voted in favor of preventing future presidents from serving for over two consecutive five-year terms.
"The Mauritanian people have clearly expressed their determination to build a true democracy ... which will guarantee its citizens freedom, equality and justice," the head of the ruling military junta, Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall, said, according to Reuters.
"In voting massively for the constitutional reforms ... the Mauritanian people have proved their active and conscious commitment to the political programme proposed by the military council," Vall said in a statement.
