ALBAWABA - The death toll in Afghanistan's earthquake has risen to more than 800 people, the Taliban authorities confirmed Monday.
Earlier, the Taliban's interior ministry revealed that an earthquake had jolted Afghanistan, killing at least 622 people with more than 1,500 others injured.
A strong 6.0-magnitude quake and multiple aftershocks were reported in eastern Afghanistan, provincial Nangarhar government officials announced.
"610 people were killed and 1,300 were injured in Kunar province, with numerous houses destroyed", Abdul Mateen Qani, the spokesperson of the ministry, said.
He continued that in Nangarhar province, 12 others were confirmed dead, with another 255 injured.
AFP journalists revealed that the earthquake hit Afghanistan shortly before midnight, causing serious damage to buildings in Kabul.
According to sources, the earthquake also shook Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, which is about 370 kilometres away, for several seconds.
Afghan Red Crescent posted photos of rescue workers during operations to save those who are trapped under rubble after the powerful quake that struck Afghanistan.
It wrote: "A powerful earthquake struck late last night in various areas of Nurgal district, Kunar province, causing both human casualties and significant financial losses to local communities."
Afghan Red Crescent further revealed: "In the immediate aftermath, officials from the ARCS, along with medical teams, rushed to the affected areas and are currently providing emergency assistance to impacted families."
