The Libyan Union for Human Rights has announced it will organize two demonstrations in Europe on September 1 to demand the release of political prisoners and an end to what it describes "increasing violations of human rights."
The demonstrations will take place in Holland and Switzerland, said the union's secretary general, Mohammad Kasim, in a statement to Albawaba.com.
"The demonstrations will be held in order to demand the Libyan regime with the immediate release of all the political prisoners in Libya who are estimated to be over 2500 among whom women and elderly," reads the statement.
"Launching of common freedoms and stopping the increasing violations of human rights," the statement adds.
According to Amnesty International’s Report 2000, hundreds of political prisoners remained in detention in Libya without charge or trial, while many others remained held despite having being tried and acquitted.
The London-based organization claims that political detainees are routinely tortured.
