Liberia on Wednesday claimed it had "scored major successes" against rebel attacks in Lofa County along the country's northern border with Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Information Minister Reginald Goodrich told reporters here: "Due to security reasons it is not prudent to give the direct location of where government has scored successes but I can assure you that we have scored a major success in the Lofa war."

Goodrich had earlier said that government forces were containing the rebels and that fighting was concentrated in Zorzor, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) north of Monrovia.

The fighting had displaced about 60,000 people, according to the Liberia refugee agency.

The clashes have intensified in the provincial capital Voinjama since sports minister Francois Massaquoi was killed there last month – MONROVIA (AFP)
