Lebanon's President names new PM

Lebanon's President Emile Lahoud named pro-Syrian politician Omar Karami as prime minister on Thursday and asked him to form the next government, replacing Rafik al Hariri. 

 

Lahoud named Karami after polling legislators from the 128-seat Parliament on Thursday, according to a presidential statement read by the president's spokesman, Rafik Shalala. 

 

Karami was born in Tripoli on September 7, 1934. Brother of many-time prime minister Rashid Karami, who was assassinated in 1987 in an explosion that shot down a helicopter he was boarding enroute from Beirut to Tripoli.
