Lebanonese Defense Minister Khalil Hrawi rejected Monday calls by several MPs to shorten the current one-year term of compulsory military service for young people, reported the Daily Star.
Hrawi, who attended a meeting of Parliament’s defense and security Committee, rejected MPs’ calls for a shorter period.
MP Faisal Daoud, who chaired the meeting, said afterward that participants agreed not to make any decision about reducing the service term without first consulting the military establishment.
“Other matters were also discussed, including the size of the Lebanese Army,” he added.
In a related development, the military tribunal handed down 39 sentences on Monday to draft-dodgers, said the paper.
