Lebanon gave slain journalist Samir Kassir a hero's farewell on Saturday. Senior opposition figures, including Elias Atallah Chief of the Democratic Left Movement, at which Kassir was an executive council member, were among the casket carriers.

Kassir's wife, star talk show host of Al Arabiyah satellite network Giselle Khoury, walked behind the coffin.

Prominent opposition leaders packed the cathedral as the casket was placed on the altar for the funeral service. Among them were Walid Jumblat and his wife, Saad Hariri, ex-President Amin Gemayel, presidential aspirant Butros Harb and his wife as well as the entire foreign diplomatic corps.

Kassir's assassination on Thursday has widely been blamed on pro-Syrian elements and Damascus.
