General Security head Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim Monday warned that more attacks similar to the twin suicide bombing which rocked Beirut's southern suburb neighborhood of Burj al-Barajneh are being planned.
"Several militant networks are under surveillance...but we expect more attacks...we have been warned of the threats and we still have a long way to go," Ibrahim told Al-Joumhouria newspaper.
A double suicide bombing hit the Burj al-Barajneh last week, killing 46 people and wounding at least 200 others.
The top security chief said security forces have been expecting such attacks since "terror organizations decided to target Lebanon and they [have no intention] of hesitating or withholding [the attacks]."
"It's an open war between us...however, we will carry out our tasks [to confront] the vast challenges because their (militants) adopted techniques, such as suicide attackers wearing explosive belts, are very difficult to foil without conducting thorough investigations."
Lebanese authorities have arrested seven Syrians and two Lebanese suspected of involvement in the deadly ISIS-claimed attack, Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk said Sunday.
"The preemptive investigation that we conducted over this period has helped us thwart several terrorist schemes and save a lot of innocent blood, in particularity the cells and suspects busted over the past few weeks, which were proven to have links to ISIS and their involvement in direct terror acts in Raqqa (ISIS capital in Syria."
