Four Lebanese and two Palestinians have been detained in Lebanon on charges of smuggling illegal immigrants by sea to Europe, officials said on Monday.
Lebanese authorities have nabbed "the most important ring which smuggles illegal immigrants from Lebanese coasts to Europe in return for large sums of money and under inhumane and life-threatening conditions," one official conveyed, according to AFP.
The six were identified as "prime suspect" Salim Khalifeh, his son Abdel Karim, Kamal Yunes, a ship captain, Mohammad Idriss, and Palestinians Ali al-Aridi and Khodor al-Aridi.
The arrests were made under the supervision of Interior Minister Elias Murr. Investigations are currently underway to catch additional ring members, the officials added. (Albawaba.com)
