Muslim cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed on Thursday was detained in Lebanon. According to Sky News, the British Foreign Office has said he is not being held at the request of British authorities.

A security source in Lebanon told Reuters news agency: "Sheikh Bakri was picked up by security forces as he was on his way to a local television station for an interview." No reason has been given for the cleric's detention.

Bakri, 45, travelled to Lebanon from the UK last weekend saying he was going to visit his mother.

His trip came after he refused to condemn the London bombings and as the British Government considers reviving the old law of treason. The Muslim cleric also sparked outrage when he said he would not tell police if he knew who was behind the blasts on London.

Bakri is the founder and spiritual leader of the al Muhajiroun group. He openly expressed support in attacks against US and British forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The cleric has lived in the UK since he arrived as an asylum seeker from Saudi Arabia in 1985.
