The second phase of dredging at the Lebanese port of Tripoli could start as early as next week, since the project is awaiting only the go-ahead from the port's board of directors, the Daily Star reported Wednesday.

Michael Moufarez, president of Mamco General Contractors, was quoted by the paper as saying “we have started the mobilization of equipment and hope to start actual dredging on Monday (May 21).”

In the first phase of dredging, the port entrance channel and turning basins were deepened from nine meters to 12 meters to enable larger ships to enter the port.

The paper noted that the second phase would involve further dredging of the port to 13 meters.

Mamco is the local partner in the $9.5 million dredging project, which began in August 2000 with the Dutch engineering firm Ballast Nedham – Albawaba.com
