Lebanese opposition is set to intensify its activities following Thursday's killing of a prominent journalist. Its leaders called on Friday for an evening sit-in in Beirut's Martyrs Square in tribute to Al-Nahar journalist Samir Kassir.
The sit-in will last until Monday where participants will gather close to the Presidential Palace at 3 p.m. demanding the resignation of senior security officials.
According to KUNA, the opposition also renewed its demands for the resignation of Lebanese President Emile Lahoud. Opposition will attend Saturday Kassir's funeral ceremony, calling on civil societies, media personnel and scholars to take part in the ceremony.
On its part, Syria rejected on Thursday claims by the opposition that its agents were involved in the killing of the journalist.
"These accusations are expected because of the their circulators role in the damaging campaigns against Syria, and their contribution to media and political pressures put on her as to satisfy Syria and Lebanon enemies and Arabs foes in general," a source at the ministry of information told SANA. "These accusations are in the framework of the yellow journalism that expresses the cheapness of its writers and the isolation of their ideas as well their consolidated enmity to everything that will boost the Arab situation including Lebanon’s unity, independence and stability," the source added.
