ALBAWABA - Lebanese MPs started to arrive at Nejmeh Square to hold a session to elect the 14th president of Lebanon.
In the previous 13th sessions, Lebanese lawmakers were unable to settle on picking a new president following the departure of Michel Aoun in 2022.
As for this session, the Lebanese officials and people are optimistic that a new leader could be chosen on Thursday session with votes expected to go for Joseph Aoun, a Lebanese general and the 14th Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces since 2017.
Anadolu Agency reported that at least 81 lawmakers representing different parties and blocs in the country are in favor of Joseph Aoun, Lebanon's army commander.
Former Lebanese MP and Minister of Justice, Ashraf Rifi suggested that he is optimistic that Joseph Aoun has an 80 percent chance of becoming president.
The process of electing a new president in Lebanon requires a two-thirds majority of the votes of the 128 members of parliament in the first round, while an absolute majority (over 50 percent) is sufficient in subsequent rounds.
Since October 2022, former Lebanese president Michel Aoun left office and since then the government has been facing obstacles in electing a new president.
