Lebanese politicians are expressing increasing concern over the country's shaky economic situation, said the Daily Star Sunday.
Coupled with an already tense political atmosphere, the overall climate of pessimism prevailing in the country is unsurprising, said the paper.
During their last meeting in Ain Al Tineh on Thursday, Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Rafik Hariri focused on the need to find solutions to these economic problems, said the daily.
According to the paper, the speaker urged the premier to make all possible efforts to remedy what has become an unbearable situation.
Berri reportedly asked Hariri how useful it was to have a US$100 million Arab deposit, when each morning, Lebanon wakes up with a US$9 million debt servicing bill.
This meant that in 11 days, any Arab deposit of this value would inevitably lose its effect, the speaker said, cited by the paper.
Berri also complained that the government was not benefiting from Arab financial assistance in de-mining the southern region. The speaker was able to secure the aid during his February visit to the Gulf states – Albawaba.com
