A Lebanese civilian lost both of his legs Sunday after he stepped on a mine left over from Israel's occupation of the southern part of the country, Lebanese police said.
Samih Nasser, 24, walked over the mine near the former position of al-Salaa in the Marjayoun region, where he was collecting scrap metal for resale.
He was hospitalized in Nabatiyeh, where doctors had to amputate his legs.
Nine Lebanese civilians have been killed and 62 others injured by mines left over after Israel ended its 22-year occupation of south Lebanon in May, according to an AFP tally. Another dozen Lebanese soldiers have been injured in demining work.
The United Nations, which is also working to remove the mines, estimates there are some 130,000 mines, shells and other explosives in the former Israeli zone -- SIDON, Lebanon (AFP)
