Lebanese Christian former militia leader Samir Geagea was released Tuesday morning after serving 11 years in jail for offences committed during the 1975-1990 civil war, army sources said. "Samir Geagea was driven to Beirut international airport," in a military convoy for a flight to Europe, the sources said, according to AFP.
Geagea, 53, intends to rest and undergo medical tests there, it was reported last week.
An amnesty law pardoning Geagea was approved by parliament last week and published in the official gazette on Thursday.
He was cleared of a 1994 bomb attack on a church that left 11 dead but handed four death sentences, all later commuted to life imprisonment, for offences during the war, notably the 1987 killing of prime minister Rashid Karameh.
