A suicide bomber blew up the truck he was driving near a college in a Shiite area in Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least 18 people and injuring 27, police and hospital officials said.

According to the AP, the attack occurred about 9:50 a.m. at the College of Economic Sciences as students were arriving for class at the campus in the Iskan neighborhood in western Baghdad.

Police said they also discovered a booby-trapped ambulance about 500 yards away and they were trying to defuse it.

Nationwide, 139 people were killed or found dead in violence on Monday, according to police reports. The attacks come as U.S. and Iraqi forces have launched a Baghdad security plan, aimed at clamping down on the daily bloodshed. U.S. military officials claim the Baghdad crackdown is in its early stages.
