A car bomb went off in the northeastern city of Mosul on Monday as a seven-vehicle Iraqi National Guard patrol was passing by, killing at least four guardsmen and injuring three others, police said.
According to The AP, gunmen followed up the bombing with a burst of automatic weapons fire before fleeing the scene, said Lt. Col. Saleh Jamer, the patrol's commander.
He said two guard vehicles and two civilian cars were damaged in the attack.
A suicide attacker later detonated an explosives-packed vehicle at a national guard checkpoint near Fallujah, killing at least three guardsmen and wounding several other people, police said.
Meanwhile, American troops launched attacks in the Baghdad slum of Sadr City early Monday, killing at least five people and injuring 46, including 15 women and 9 children, hospital officials and witnesses said. Residents said huge blasts echoed throughout the night and that U.S. jets repeatedly swooped low over the area.
Also Monday, a roadside bomb apparently intended for a U.S. military convoy went off prematurely outside the city of Baqouba, killing four civilians, said Hussein Ali of the Baqouba General Hospital.
Elsewhere, two American troops were killed in separate incidents Monday near Balad, north of the Iraqi capital. The first died in a car crash and the second was killed when a patrol came under fire as it returned from the crash, the military said. (albawaba.com)
