A leading Iraqi Shiite cleric called on Friday for coordination with the "coalition" states to draw up a mechanism for withdrawal of their troops from Iraq, noting that this goal could be attainable with a new constitution and free polls.
Ayatollah Mohammed Taqi Modaressi, said in the city of Karbalaa the occupation of Iraq was result of extraordinary circumstances and "it should end once these conditions end and if this does not happen the Shiites might alter their strategy."
He indicated that the Iraqi Shiites would wage armed resistance against the occupation forces in the event their top scholars issued an edict in this regard, KUNA quoted him as saying.
