Leading Iraqi Shiite cleric calls for quick end of US occupation

A leading Iraqi Shiite cleric called on Friday for coordination with the "coalition" states to draw up a mechanism for withdrawal of their troops from Iraq, noting that this goal could be attainable with a new constitution and free polls.‏  

 

Ayatollah Mohammed Taqi Modaressi, said in the ‏city of Karbalaa the occupation of Iraq was result of extraordinary circumstances and "it should end once these conditions end and if this does ‏not happen the Shiites might alter their strategy."‏  

 

He indicated that the Iraqi Shiites would wage armed resistance against the ‏‏occupation forces in the event their top scholars issued an edict in this ‏regard, KUNA quoted him as saying.
