Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah denied on Sunday press reports that Russia is mediating between his country and Iraq, reported the official Kuwaiti news agency (KUNA).

According to KUNA, press reports said that Russian ambassador at large, Nikolai Kartuzov, who arrived in the Gulf state on Friday, carried a message from President Vladimir Putin, offering to meditate between the two arch foes.

“The ambassador handed us a letter concerning the security and stability in the region,” said the Kuwaiti minister. “No mediation was offered.”

"The Russians are trying to calm the situation in the region, we heard their point of view and they heard ours," he added.

Kartusov said Saturday after meeting with the Kuwaiti foreign minister that the discussions focused on the situation in the occupied territories and bilateral relations.

The Russian diplomat also denied carrying any initiative over the Iraqi-Kuwaiti situation, KUNA said.

Kuwait is the first leg of Kartuzov’s tour, which will also take him Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria, said the agency – Albawaba.com
