A car bomb has exploded in the industrial district of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, killing at least three people and injuring 15.

A police official said the car was parked in the southern neighborhood when it exploded as people were passing in the street. Another official said it was not a suicide attack.

In the meantime, the military said a US soldier in Iraq has died of injuries he sustained when his patrol struck a land mine west of Baghdad. In a statement Tuesday, the military said the explosion occurred Monday morning.

Meanwhile, in Baghdad, gunmen Tuesday assassinated a police colonel, Amir Mirza, in a market in the city's Wahda district, police said.

An Iraqi civilian was killed and nine were wounded in a blast Tuesday in Tal Afar. The explosion in Tal Afar occurred after witnesses said someone placed a suspicious object in the trunk of a car and fled the scene, the U.S. military said.
