The king and queen of Nepal, along with 12 other members of the royal family, were shot dead during a family dinner at the royal palace in Kathmandu, army sources and sources close to the prime minister said Saturday.
King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya, Crown Prince Dipendra, Prince Nirajan and Princess Shruti were among those who died at the Narayan Hity royal palace during the family's regular Friday dinner.
There was no official confirmation of what occurred. An official announcement on the incident was expected on Saturday morning local time.
The 55-year-old king had ruled since 1972, as an absolute monarch until a constitutional monarchy was introduced in 1990 -- KATHMANDU, June 2 (AFP)
