The commander of U.S. forces in the Gulf region, Army Gen. Tommy Franks, arrived in Amman Tuesday for talks with senior Jordanian officials expected to focus on contingency plans for a possible U.S. war on Iraq, officials said.

They told Reuters that Franks, expected to lead any military action in Iraq, would meet King Abdullah and senior army officials during the two-day visit. "Iraq is clearly on top of everyone's mind," one Jordanian official said.

Jordanian officials could not confirm if Franks was planning to attend joint military exercises with the United States under way in an undisclosed location in Jordan.

The kingdom said the exercises were part of scheduled training that includes contingents from other countries and are unrelated to any possible U.S. military action against Iraq. (Albawaba.com)
