Iranian President Mohammad Khatami held talks Sunday with his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez on bilateral and regional issues, reported the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).

Chavez, accompanied by a high-ranking political and economic delegation, arrived in Tehran late Saturday.

Speaking to reporters upon arrival, Chavez said his visit to Iran was aimed at "consolidating strategic unity" between the two countries.

"We have come here to further consolidate unity between the two nations and governments in an effort to pave the way towards justice, peace, stability and progress in the 21st century," said the Venezuelan president.

Chavez, whose country presides over the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), said he and his Iranian counterpart would discuss ways to stabilize oil prices.

Chavez is on an Asian tour that will also take him to India, China, Malaysia and Indonesia, said IRNA – Albawaba.com
