Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, heading a high-ranking delegation, left Tehran for New York on Thursday morning to participate at a session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He will attend the special session, scheduled for November 8-10, to have an international convention on the dialogue among civilizations approved, reported the Iranian official news agency (IRNA).

The United Nations designated 2001, as the Year of Dialogue among Civilizations on President Khatami's initiative.

The president sees that such a convention is more vital than ever, in light of the recent international developments in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the US as well as the ongoing Afghan crisis.

Iran supports an international fight against terrorism “in order to uproot the evil phenomenon,” according to the agency.

Although the Islamic Republic was swift to condemn the terror attacks, it was the first Middle Eastern country to denounce the US-led strikes on Afghanistan for taking their toll on the civilians.
