A Belgian KFOR officer confirmed Sunday that a Belgian peacekeeper fired the shot which killed a Kosovo Serb protester the day before, saying that it was a "warning shot which ricocheted."
The officer was speaking in the northern Kosovo town of Leposavic as protesters began to gather again in front of the UN police building, which was the scene of Saturday's protest.
A 20-year-old protester died in a military hospital in nearby Kosovska Mitrovica following Saturday's incident, in which another Serb demonstrator was wounded and a third suffered a heart attack, according to a spokesman for the NATO-led peacekeeping force.
The protest erupted after UN police arrested Vladimir Tomovic, a Kosovo Serb "known by police as a criminal", a KFOR spokesman said.
An angry crowd surrounded the barracks of the Belgian contingent of KFOR, trapped three military vehicles and threw stones at the nearby UN administrative building -- LEPOSAVIC (AFP)
