A recent decision to unify kerosene and diesel prices to crack down on the sale of fraudulently diluted mixtures has resulted in a sharp decline in kerosene sales in Jordan, official figures showed.
According to the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company (JPRC), sales of kerosene dropped by 83 per cent during the first four days after the implementation of the decision, as compared to the last four days before unifying the price, said the Jordan Times.
The August 15 decision increases the price of kerosene by 21 percent from 91 fils per liter to 110 fils, thus making it as expensive as diesel.
According to the JPRC, total sales of kerosene during the first four days after the hike dropped to around 590,000 liters as compared to 3.4 million liters four days before the decision.
The hike followed complaints that some gas distributors were mixing diesel and gasoline with the cheaper kerosene to make more profit.
The fuel dilution problem surfaced after a July decision that increased the prices of gasoline and cooking gas by 15 percent and diesel prices by 3.8 percent, but kept the price of kerosene unchanged – Albawaba.com
