Libyan president Moamer Kadhafi Tuesday arrived in Malawi to a hero's welcome at the beginning of his first official four-day visit to the impoverished southern African state.
Kadhafi, who flew from neighboring Mozambique, was greeted by President Bakili Muluzi in the administrative capital Lilongwe, as over 5,000 people cheered on his arrival.
Several placards proclaiming "Kadhafi champion of African Unity" welcomed the Libyan leader, AFP said. The two presidents will make a whistle-stop drive of 352 kilometers from Lilongwe to Blantyre, the commercial capital, a journey which may take over five hours and hardly ever undertaken by Muluzi since he became president in 1994.
Muluzi said the Libyan leader would be formally welcomed with a rally Wednesday at the main 60,000-seater stadium in Blantyre. (Albawaba.com)
