Jordan's King Abdullah II expressed, during talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday, his concern over the deteriorating security and economic situation in the Palestinian territories.
According to Petra, the King called on all parties on the Palestinian front to exert efforts and unify ranks to overcome challenges facing the Palestinian people. The king underlined the importance of ending any military escalation and calming the situation between the Palestinians and Israelis to build confidence at this stage and ensure a quick return to the negotiating table.
King Abdullah urged the international community to shoulder its responsibilities through ensuring the flow of international aid to the Palestinian lands to avoid a humanitarian crisis. He added that the Palestinians "are the only ones affected by the halt of aid," noting Jordan will continue efforts with the international community to solve this issue.
During the meeting, the king also briefed Abbas on the outcome of his talks with the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on June 8.
In his talks with Olmert, the King stressed that the two-state solution is the only solution that all parties in the Middle East and the international community should work on to achieve.
