ALBAWABA - A report by Reuters revealed that Jordan has foiled suspected arms smuggling attempt, citing two Jordanian sources with knowledge of the matter.
The two Jordanian sources, who requested anonymity to discuss security matters, declined to say what acts of sabotage were allegedly being planned, citing ongoing investigations and covert operations.
According to Reuters, Iranian-backed militants in Syria sent the weapons to a Muslim Brotherhood cell in Jordan with ties to the military branch of the Hamas. The arms seized after the cell's members, Jordanians of Palestinian heritage were apprehended in late March, they added.
The report revealed the plot's goal was to destabilize Jordan, which holds a US military facility and shares borders with Israel, Syria, and Iraq, all of which are home to Iranian-backed militias.
The sources did not specify what weapons were recovered in the March raid but stated that in recent months security services have prevented multiple attempts by Iran and its backed groups to sneak in munitions.
One of the sources, an official with knowledge of security matters, referring to the modus operandi of the smugglers, told Reuters: "They hide these weapons in pits called dead spots, they take their location via GPS and photograph their location and then instruct men to retrieve them from there,".
