Three members of Lebanon's Hizbullah held for several months in Jordan on charges of trying to smuggle arms to the Palestinians were freed and returned to Beirut, the group said late Wednesday.

Hizbullah's leader, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, telephoned President Emile Lahoud "to thank him for the efforts, notably by the interior ministry and general security, that led to the releases," a statement said.

The Lebanese movement disclosed in March it had asked Jordanian authorities to release the men detained for trying to smuggle arms to the Palestinian territories.

According to Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan Moasher, they were held for security and not political reasons.

"Hizbullah is a party that we respect. The three people were transporting weapons, which is against the law," he said. (Albawaba.com)
