Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Amman Sunday, Reuters reports. Demonstrators burned Israeli flags, chanted “Death to Israel,” and called for Hamas to increase rocket attacks on the Jewish state. This latest public display of anger from Jordanians was one of the largest in years.
According to Reuters, hundreds of mosques across Jordan held prayers this week for Gazans killed in Israel’s latest offensive. Eighteen Israelis have died, while over 400 Palestinians have been killed.
The leader of Jordan’s Muslim Brotherhood, Sheikh Hammam Saed, criticized Arab leaders in the region for failing to support Hamas.
“These Arab regimes have made us accustomed to taste the bitterness of defeat and now the day has come that someone (Hamas) has ended this humiliation and weakness by their heroic resistance,” Saed told protesters.
The demonstrators chanted pro-Hamas slogans and demanded the Jordanian government scrap its peace treaty with Israel. A cordon of riot police prevented protesters from approaching the embassy.
