Jordan and Egypt on Tuesday urged Israel to put an end to its “savage” aggression against the Palestinian people, and to return to the negotiation table on the basis of UN resolutions 242 and 338, as well as the principle of land for peace, reported Jordan’s official Petra news agency.
In the final communiqué issued after the two countries’ joint committee meeting in Amman, they called on the United Nations to provide the Palestinians with protection and work to put an end to the economic siege imposed on them.
"Israel must put an immediate end to its savage measures and the mass punishment imposed by the Israel occupation forces against the Palestinian people," the officials said.
The meeting was co-chaired by Jordanian Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb and his visiting Egyptian counterpart Atef Ebeid.
It reiterated full support for the creation of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem as well as the right of Palestinian refugees to return to land held by Israel and to compensation.
Jordan and Egypt -- the only two Arab countries to sign peace treaties with Israel –- also called for Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights, “and the rest of the Lebanese territories in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 425.”
The statement was referring to the disputed Shabaa farms in south Lebanon, which the Arabs consider to be Lebanese territory, while the UN considers the resolution fully implemented.
The officials also discussed Iraq’s issues, and voiced hope that the country would reached a peaceful settlement with the UN, underlying the necessity of safeguarding the integrity of Iraq’s lands. However, they hoped that international resolutions be respected by the Arab country – Albawaba.com
