Lebanese truck drivers were prevented from taking apples into Jordan this week, with no official explanation given for the move, reported the Daily Star newspaper on Saturday.

An advisor to the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture said that an inquiry was underway into the matter.

According to a businessman in Sidon, the Lebanese farmers are subject to the agricultural schedule, an agreement between the two countries that allows the export of apples to Jordan between March and May.

He said that a misunderstanding might have led to the apples being turned away at the border after May 1, even though they are allowed into Jordan until May 31.

Lebanon grows 200,000 tons of apples each year and consumes about 150,000 tons. The rest are exported to Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf.

Libya used to be an important market for Lebanese apples, but it purchased no Lebanese apples this year for political reasons, said earlier reports – Albawaba.com
