Jordan’s general federation of labor unions intends to form a political party to prepare for national elections, the federation’s head announced on Tuesday.
During a press conference, Mazen Maaytah told reporters that the federation was also pressing for a special quota of parliament seats for workers, according to the Jordan Times.
“Workers should have a role in political life, and the federation, which represents 1 million Jordanian workers, should represent them on the political scene,” said Maaytah.
He called for amending the Elections Law to allow for a quota for women as well.
Although no date has yet been announced for the elections, tribes and large unions have started naming their candidates.
Maaytah said the federation had so far named four candidates, himself included – Albawaba.com
