Jordan’s King Abdullah II met with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres in New York on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) to review Middle East peace efforts, Jordan's official Petra News Agency reported on Sunday.
Their Saturday meeting was the first between the Monarch and Foreign Minister Peres since last April, when they held talks in Akaba.
“Efforts underway to put a halt to the tension in the region and to restore calm in the Palestinian territories” were at the focus of their discussions, Petra Agency said.
Relations between neighboring Israel and Jordan, that signed a peace treaty in 1994 after the launch of Palestinian self-rule, have cooled since the September 2000 outbreak of the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation.
In November 2000, Amman froze the sending of a new ambassador to Tel Aviv in protest of Israeli repression in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. (Albawaba.com)
