In a regular meeting to oversee the development of the information technology sector, officials and private sector representatives on Monday reviewed progress on e-commerce legislation, presented proposals for Internet cafés regulations, and lamented the authorities' return to lengthy inspection practices, reported Jordan Times.

Monday’s was the fourth meeting of the Reach Advisory Council (RAC) — a private-public sector body in charge of supervising the implementation of "Reach," the national IT development strategy — since it was established earlier this year.

According to the paper, Int@j presented a position paper regarding inspection of imported software packages by custom officers, making clear that such practice was hindering business procedures for both software importers and IT developers, as well as causing financial losses to the industry. The Jordan Computer Society said at the meeting that progress had been made on this issue in the past, but now authorities have resumed the previous regime of inspections on software.

The Ministry of Telecommunications and Post also presented at the meeting the latest draft for Internet café regulations, a collective public-private effort aimed at encouraging the development of Internet cafés as a tool to encourage the use of technology and Internet among all segments of the population – Albawaba.com
